PORT ANGELES — A Sequim man accused of striking a Port Angeles police officer in the head with a can of Mike’s Hard Lemonade has pleaded guilty to one count of assaulting an officer.

Trevor Keith Durham, 21, will serve 30 days in jail with credit for 12 days served after being sentenced Tuesday, said John Troberg, deputy Clallam County prosecuting attorney.

Durham pleaded guilty to one count of third-degree assault against a police officer in connection with hitting Officer Shane Martin in the head Aug. 8 with a can of alcoholic beverage Troberg later identified as Mike’s Hard Lemonade.

Police account

Martin’s arrest report, filed in Clallam County Superior Court, gave this account:

Martin saw Durham walking west on the north sidewalk in the 1000 block of Front Street at about 11:30 a.m. Aug. 8.

Martin was passing Durham in his patrol car and asked 9-1-1 dispatch to check Durham for any outstanding warrants.

Martin turned around to catch up with Durham after the dispatcher told him Durham had an outstanding arrest warrant.

Martin got out of his car and approached Durham from the back, calling him by name.

Martin then grabbed Durham by the left arm and told him he was under arrest for the outstanding warrant.

Durham attempted to pull away, swinging his right arm while holding the can of alcohol beverage and, as Martin lowered his head, striking Martin in the head with it.

Martin then subdued Durham on the ground with the help of Port Angeles Police Detective Sgt. Jesse Winfield and two Border Patrol agents.

Martin took Durham to Olympic Medical Center because he was complaining of pain in his ribs and later booked him into the Clallam County jail.
