NEAH BAY — Donna Wilke calls it the cutest show on the North Olympic Peninsula.
The Makah tribal member and grandmother may be right.
On Tuesday morning, about two dozen children ranging from 2 to 7 years of age went through a dance rehearsal at the Makah Community Center.
All the children, dressed in black-and-red traditional Makah outfits, danced to Makah songs.
Some of them knew the movements better than others, but they all had a good grasp of what they were supposed to be doing.
Even when they accidentally bumped into each other.
Today through Sunday during the 81st annual Makah Days in Neah Bay, they will have a chance to strut their stuff for the public.
Makah Days starts at 11 a.m. today when children will participate in a canoe race.
After that, there will be vendors out all day along the bay.
At 7 p.m. today, there will be a talent show, followed by the crowning of royalty and a fireworks show about 10 p.m.
At 10 a.m. Saturday, a parade will start at the Makah museum and move west through the town.
After that will be a flag raising by the bay, followed by the dancing from the children (first the older group, then the younger children) by the bay.
The dancing is scheduled to last about three hours.
At 7 p.m. Saturday, adult Makah members will perform dances at the high school gymnasium.
More canoe races will follow Sunday.
To get to Neah Bay, go west on state Highway 112 until you reach town.
