SEQUIM — More than 30 MoveOn.org supporters from Sequim and Port Angeles gathered at the intersection of Washington Street and Sequim Avenue late Tuesday afternoon for a “Tax Day” protest.
The message of the group, led by Andrea Radich of Port Angeles — to tax the 1 percent and spare the 99 percent — joined other protests of the tax system across the nation.
Radich attempted to present a symbolic $3.9 trillion tax bill to the Sequim branch manager of the Bank of America on South Sequim Avenue, but a security guard locked the door, and Radich taped the bill to the front door.
After the protesters left the bank, three Sequim police officers arrived.
Police respond to call
Sequim Police Chief Bill Dickinson said they were responding to a call from a bank employee received shortly after the protest was taped to the door.
“They apparently felt threatened,” Dickinson said of the bank’s staff.
“They locked themselves in, and that was their protocol if they feel threatened.”
Dickinson said the officers found no protesters near the bank building and left.
“This is not uncommon for them to protest out there,” Dickinson said, referring to past demonstrations at the Bank of America Park.
“People can protest as long as they want as long as they don’t block the sidewalk or hurt anyone or anything like that.”
Darcie Senf, Bank of America Sequim branch manager, did not return a call requesting comment Wednesday.
