Accused assailant of Port Angeles teen sentenced; she awaits trial for baby’s death

A Pueblo, Colo., man who fathered the child that a Port Angeles teen is accused of killing has been sentenced to four years in prison for criminal attempt to commit sexual assault on a child.

DNA tests confirm that Gregory Greenway, 37, fathered the child of then-15-year-old Lauryn Last in 2008.

Last, now 17, gave birth to the baby boy at her father’s Port Angeles home Dec. 30, 2008.

She is accused of drowning him in a toilet and disposing of the body in a trash can.

Greenway received the four-year sentence in Pueblo District Court on Monday, after making a plea bargain.

He originally was charged with sexual assault on a child in a position of trust and faced a potential life sentence.

Last, who is being charged as an adult, pleaded not guilty to murder in Clallam County Superior Court in January and has maintained her innocence.

She awaits a Jan. 25 trial in Clallam County Superior Court. A pre-trial hearing is set for 1:30 p.m. Friday.

Greenway pled guilty to criminal attempt to commit sexual assault on a child in September. As part of the plea, he faced a maximum of four years in prison.

Asked for leniency

The Pueblo Chieftain reported that Greenway asked District Judge Victor Reyes for leniency Monday.

“I take full responsibilities for my wrongdoing,” Greenway was quoted as saying.

The Chieftain also reported that Greenway addressed Last’s mother, Dawn Harris.

“I’m sorry for what I have caused you and your daughter,” he said. “I’m not a bad man. I just made a very bad choice.”

A 65-foot-long historic tug rests in the Port of Port Townsend Boat Haven Marina’s 300-ton marine lift as workers use pressure washers to blast years of barnacles and other marine life off the hull. The tug was built for the U.S. Army at Peterson SB in Tacoma in 1944. Originally designated TP-133, it is currently named Island Champion after going through several owners since the army sold it in 1947. It is now owned by Debbie Wright of Everett, who uses it as a liveaboard.
