SEATTLE — The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Border Patrol, seeking to bar agents from making traffic stops.
The lawsuit was filed Thursday in federal court. It says people are being questioned without reasonable suspicion.
The suit stems from tensions between immigrants and the expanded presence of Border Patrol agents on the Olympic Peninsula.
The ACLU filed the lawsuit on behalf of three Peninsula residents, including a Latino U.S. citizen stopped several times by agents and a black corrections officer who was interrogated by an armed agent while in uniform.
ACLU legal director Sarah Dunne says the Border Patrol’s actions have “created a climate of fear and anxiety.”
The lawsuit seeks an injunction barring the traffic stops.
