Alarm sounded on Fire Bell Tower funding

PORT TOWNSEND — The historic Fire Bell Tower atop the bluff overlooking Port Townsend once called volunteers to fight fires.

Now, preservationists are sounding the alarm on its behalf.

The Jefferson County Historical Society faces the dire prospect of losing a $100,000 historical preservation grant for Fire Bell Tower if it can’t raise matching funds by the end of the year.

It’s best hope for raising the funds — a golf-a-thon in which golfers sink as many holes as they can in 12 hours — may have to be canceled due to lack of interest.

Just three golfers have signed up for the Oct. 13 event at Chevy Chase Golf Course near Four Corners. That’s far short of the two dozen golfers and teams the society needs to make the event worth putting on.

If enough people or teams don’t sign up for the golf-a-thon by Friday, Museum Director Niki Clark says she may have to cancel the event.
