American Legion encouraged to seek grant for building renovation

PORT TOWNSEND – The decrepit American Legion building is a missing link of sorts at Monroe and Water streets, one that Legion members say would be cured with a decent facelift.

The 1941 building is just a stone’s throw from newly renovated 1892 City Hall, the future site of the Northwest Maritime Center and a block from the Port of Port Townsend’s Hudson Point marina project, now under way.

“It looks slightly bad,” said Bob Poe, Legion hall historian, newsletter editor and grant coordinator.

The building needs renovation and paint both inside and out.

Its basement floods during heavy rain.

After giving Gov. Chris Gregoire’s representative, Dennis Clark, a tour of the building early this month, Poe said he felt assured that the governor supports renovating the historic hall.

Poe, 76, who was with National Guard for more than six years, was encouraged to seek an historic preservation grant to get the job done.
