PORT ANGELES — The top Unlimited Light hydroplane race driver in the country for 2003 saved the best for the last race.
Jerry Hopp, who had won the national championship earlier in the day on points earned despite not winning a heat or race at the two-day Strait Thunder hydroplane races in Port Angeles Harbor, took a big lead and easily won the final race Sunday.
Coming in second was national runner-up Phil Bononcini, who had won the national title the past three consecutive years.
