PORT ANGELES — A roundabout may top Clallam County’s options for making the Old Olympic Highway/Kitchen-Dick Road intersection less perilous.
The crossing is the second most dangerous in the Clallam County road network, public works officials told the three county commissioners on Tuesday.
The intersection’s danger is surpassed only by the corner of Woodcock Road at Sequim-Dungeness Way, they said, judging by ratings that are based on the number of accidents per million miles that are driven.
Detailed ratings were not available Tuesday.
A roundabout — sometimes called a traffic circle — is “a good idea” in the words of County Engineer Ross Tyler.
However, drivers have vilified Sequim’s three roundabouts, although the circles cost substantially less than traffic lights.
Furthermore, a roundabout at Kitchen-Dick Road isn’t a done deal, said Tyler and his boss, Public Works Director Craig Jacobs.
