FORKS — Habitat for Humanity of Clallam County is accepting applications for a Habitat home as it prepares to build its next new home in Forks.
Completed applications must be received in the Habitat office by Monday, April 16.
The Clallam County Habitat affiliate has built 23 homes in Clallam County since opening its doors in 1993.
Just one of these homes is in Forks, but that will change soon.
Once a family is selected, construction is planned to start in early summer on a home that will take nine or 10 months to complete.
The project in Forks will be the second house built in the Maloney Lane subdivision at the corner of Elterich and Fir avenues.
“We’re excited about starting this next house in Forks,” said Habitat Executive Director Maitland Peet.
“We developed this property a couple of years ago, and the timing seems right to start another home there.
“The application is very straightforward.
“Folks should contact the Habitat office, and we can walk them through the process.”
Eligible applicants must earn 60 percent or less of the Clallam County median income, be capable of making monthly payments on a mortgage and be willing to participate in the construction of their home.
Participating families are required to contribute up to 500 hours or more of “sweat equity,” helping to build their house and attending classes on home maintenance and personal financial management.
They are required to pay back the cost of construction through a no-interest or low-interest mortgage.
Although some subcontractors are used for specialized work, most of the labor is provided by volunteers.
The Clallam County affiliate is part of Habitat for Humanity International, which has operations in all 50 states and in more than 150 countries worldwide.
