PORT ANGELES — The crews of two Army Blackhawk helicopters stopped for lunch Thursday at William R. Fairchild International Airport while on a rare training flight to the North Olympic Peninsula.
Chief Warrant Officer Brian Price said the six crew members and two officers, including himself, who bought their lunch at the airport terminal were on a training flight from Fort Lewis near Tacoma.
They arrived shortly before 1 p.m. and had planned to leave “whenever we are done eating,” he said.
Price said their normal training flight paths take them over the southwestern part of the state.
“We decided to take advantage of a new area that we are not familiar with” for navigation training, he said.
The helicopters were scheduled to return to Fort Lewis after flying south down the coast.
