Ballots go out today for Cape Flattery school bond election

PORT ANGELES – Ballots are being mailed today to Cape Flattery School District voters for an all-mail special election ending on March 13.

Voters will decide whether or not to approve a $3.5 million bond to upgrade gymnasiums at both the Clallam Bay and Neah Bay campuses and combine portables at Clallam Bay Elementary, among other projects.

Clallam County Auditor Patty Rosand said she will mail out about 1,000 ballots.

If the bond is approved, property owners would pay an estimated $1.50 per $1,000 assessed valuation, said Superintendent Gene Laes.

That means an owner of a $150,000 home would pay $225 per year.

If voters approve the bond, the district anticipates between $800,000 and $1 million in state matching funds, which could be received in mid 2008.

State matching funds would have the effect of lowering the tax rate, said Laes.

The bond revenue is expected to fund a new roof, restrooms that conform to the Americans With Disabilities Act and new heaters for Clallam Bay Elementary School.

Both the Clallam Bay High School and Neah Bay High School gymnasiums would be renovated.

Revamped ventilation systems, a remodel of the concession stands and new foyers for the buildings also would be funded, Laes said.

Both campuses would also receive new heaters.

To be approved, the bond must receive a 60 percent supermajority yes vote.
