PORT ANGELES — Joe Holtrop, Clallam Conservation District executive director, will present recommendations for successful bare root planting at noon Thursday.
His talk will be in the county commissioners’ meeting room (160) of the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.
The presentation is free and open to the public. Attendees can bring a lunch.
Bare root plants have little or no soil around the roots rather than being wrapped in burlap or potted in containers. Dormant deciduous plants and small evergreens are commonly sold in this manner.
Holtrop will provide information on the handling and care of bare root trees, including plant material basics, site preparation, soil requirements and planting techniques, as well as availability and ideal time for planting.
He also will provide details about the conservation district’s native plant sale, which began last Thursday. Plants must be preordered by Jan. 26 and will be available for pickup Feb. 25 or later. For more information, see http:// clallamcd.org/plant-sale.
Holtrop has undergraduate and master’s degrees in landscape architecture and a master’s degree in adult education.
He has given presentations, leading workshops and teaching courses on sustainable landscaping for 25 years.
This presentation is the last of the season’s “Green Thumb Garden Tips” brown bag series, sponsored by the WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners in Port Angeles.
The 2017 season will begin Jan. 26 with a presentation on pruning by certified horticulturist Gordon Clark.
