Bazaars, music set this weekend

Holiday bazaars, music and celebrations are scheduled across the North Olympic Peninsula this weekend.

PORT ANGELES

Hamilton bazaar

PORT ANGELES — The Hamilton Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization will hold a holiday bazaar in the school gymnasium, 1822 W. Seventh St., today and Saturday.

Hamilton families can attend from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today, and the event is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Tables are available for $25 for nonprofits, private parties and direct sales merchants, and $50 for businesses.

The event will include a bake sale, activities for kids and a book fair in the library.

Auxiliary artisan market

PORT ANGELES — The Christmas Arts and Crafts Fair, an annual project of the Olympic Medical Center Auxiliary, has been renamed this year to the Olympic Medical Center Auxiliary Holiday Artisan Market — and by any name will be conducted Saturday and Sunday.

It will be at Vern Burton Community Center, 308 E. Fourth St., from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

More than 60 vendors will offer jewelry; Christmas decorations in pottery, ceramics and glass; wood crafts; fiber arts and weaving; fashion accessories like hats, purses and scarves; leather goods; baskets; cosmetics; home decor; candles; and “other goodies.”

Proceeds from the event fund equipment for Olympic Medical Center and scholarships.

Open mic night set

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., will hold an open mic night for youth in grades 7 through 12 at 7 p.m. today.

Participants can share music, poetry and comedy, eat snacks and win door prizes.

Youth who have participated in National Novel Writing month are encouraged to attend.

The program is sponsored by Port Angeles Friends of the Library.

Dancers’ Toy Drive

PORT ANGELES — The eighth annual Peninsula Dancers’ Toy Drive will be held at the Peninsula College Pirate Union Building, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today.

Performers include the Wahine Ilikea Dancers with the hula and the Middle Eastern dance group Shula Azhar, and students of the Port Angeles Senior Center’s Use “It” or Lose “It” exercise class will perform an Irish-American dance and an Egyptian number.

Admission is a new, unwrapped child’s toy for the Salvation Army.

The presentation is open to the public.

Santa Paws visit

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles City Manager Kent Myers will portray “Santa Paws” in a fundraiser for the Olympic Peninsula Humane Society on Sunday.

“Santa Paws” will be available for photographs with pets in the atrium between Port Angeles City Hall and the Vern Burton Community Center, 308 E. Fourth St., from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Photos will be available for a $10 donation to the Olympic Peninsula Humane Society.

They will be e-mailed to participants.

Garden Club sale

PORT ANGELES — A harvest of handmade holiday decorations and baked goods will be offered at the Port Angeles Garden Club’s annual Holiday Sale on Saturday.

The sale will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 301 Lopez St., Port Angeles.

Admission is free.

The nearly 60 members of the club have decorated wreaths and swags made with fresh evergreen boughs, yule logs and centerpieces, and they are baking delectable delights to be sold along with holiday treasures of crafts and decorations.

The club’s other major fundraiser is a plant sale, which will be on April 30.

Signing rescheduled

PORT ANGELES — Local author and Peninsula Daily News historical columnist Alice Alexander will hold a book signing for her new book, Memories of Elwha Resort, at the Museum at the Carnegie, 207 S. Lincoln St., at 2 p.m. Saturday.

The event was rescheduled after last week’s snowstorm.

Memories of Elwha Resort is a collection of stories and reminiscences by the owner-operators of the resort from 1924 to 2001.

The book will be offered for $14.95 plus tax at the signing.

Refreshments will be served.

The book signing is sponsored by Odyssey Bookshop and the Clallam County Historical Society.

Christmas concerts

PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula Men’s Gospel Singers will hold a Christmas concert on Saturday.

The show will be at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave., at 7 p.m. Saturday.

A second show will be held at the Port Angeles Senior Center, 328 E. Seventh St., at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 12.

Both shows will include traditional and contemporary numbers performed by the full ensemble, duets, quartets and octets.

Admission is by donation.

Peninsula Singers compact discs will be available for sale.

Boutique benefits VIMO

PORT ANGELES — St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 510 E. Park Ave., will hold the Fiber Art and Craft Boutique benefit for Volunteers in Medicine of the Olympics on Saturday.

The boutique will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Handmade items from St. Andrew’s members as well as five guest fiber artists will be on display and for sale.

Homemade treats will be available by donation.

A short organ recital at 11 a.m. will be held, with offerings also going to Volunteers in Medicine of the Olympics.

Holiday crafts

PORT ANGELES — Sherree Kelbel will teach two holiday craft classes at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., on Saturday.

The classes will be at 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Kelbel will instruct adults in “Creating an Elegant Holiday Card With a Removable Ornament” and then help participants make a candy gift.

Kelbel is an instructor for Doodlebugs, a scrapbooking and paper craft supply store in Sequim.

This free program is funded by the Port Angeles Friends of the Library.

Store coupons will be provided by Doodlebugs.

Boy Scout tree sale starts

PORT ANGELES — Boy Scout Troop No. 1473 will be selling Christmas trees on Marine Drive between Simmer Down coffee and Action Brake & Muffler, across from Sunset Do it Best Hardware, beginning today.

Sales will continue until Sunday, Dec. 19.

Trees will be available from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Operation Candy Cane

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Fire Department’s 26th Annual Operation Candy Cane food and cash drive for local food banks will visit Port Angeles neighborhoods beginning Saturday.

Visits will continue through Thursday.

Port Angeles volunteer and staff firefighters, along with Santa Claus, will hand out candy canes from a decorated 1956 Seagrave fire engine.

Firefighters will start the trips at 5:30 each evening. They will be west of I and M streets Saturday, on I and L streets to C Street on Sunday, between C and Lincoln streets Monday, between Chase and Chambers streets Tuesday, between Jones Street and Golf Course Road on Wednesday and above Lauridsen Boulevard on Thursday.

PC holiday concert

PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula College Music Department will present its annual holiday concert in the Little Theater, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Selections by the Peninsula College Singers, Peninsula College Chamber Choir and Peninsula College Early Music Ensemble will include works by Gabrielli, Giovanni, Bach, Muczynski, Leontovich, Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Lauridsen and Holst as well as some traditional music of the season.

The PC Jazz Ensemble will announce its composers and compositions at the time of the concert.

The concert is free and open to the public.

Neighborhood watch talk

PORT ANGELES — Clallam County Neighborhood Watch will discuss its services at the Dry Creek Grange, 3520 W. Edgewood Drive, at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Awana Christmas Fest

JOYCE — The Joyce Bible Church, 50470 state Route 112, will hold its annual Joyce Awana Christmas Festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The event includes a decorated tree auction, live and silent auctions, music, food, a Nativity and an archery competition open to all ages.

Refreshments will be served.

Lions host meal

JOYCE — The Port Angeles Lions Club will host the weekly all-you-can-eat breakfast at the Crescent Bay Lions Club clubhouse, corner of Holly Hill Road and state Highway 112, on Sunday.

The breakfasts are from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. each Sunday.

The cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children.

On the menu will be pancakes, French toast, eggs, meats, biscuits and gravy, and beverages.

Proceeds from the breakfast go toward health screenings, eyeglass recycling and other community service projects.

Genealogy party set

SEQUIM — The Clallam County Genealogy Society will hold its annual potluck and Christmas party at the Sequim Garden Club Clubhouse in Pioneer Memorial Park, 387 E. Washington St., from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Attendees should bring an unsigned photo of themselves as a youth or teen for the society’s matching game.

Art reception set

SEQUIM — The Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., will be part of Sequim’s First Friday Art Walk during an after-hours Art in the Library reception featuring artist Robert Lee from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday.

Lee’s work will be on display, light refreshments will be available and live jazz music will be performed.

Live music for the Art in the Library reception will be provided from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. by Chez Jazz, a local group featuring vocalist Sarah Shea, Al Harris on keyboard and Ted Enderle on bass.

Art in the Library is a collaborative library/community art project featuring rotating exhibits by local artists.

Lee’s paintings will remain on display at the Sequim Library throughout December and January.

SEQUIM — A Christmas boutique and fundraiser for Care Net of Clallam County will be held at Redeeming Life Church, 425 E. Washington St., from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Winter celebration

SEQUIM — First Teacher’s Winter Celebration will be held in the commons at Sequim Community School, 220 W. Alder St., from 10 a.m. to noon today.

Santa Claus (Walt Schubert) and Frosty the Snowman (Stephen Rosales) will sit with children for free photos.

Historical photo event

The museum will feature historical photographs of Jumbo, Horace McCurdy’s pet dog, in the City Council Chamber.

McCurdy, a native of Port Townsend, was a shipbuilder, bridge builder, civic leader and a supporter of maritime research and maritime collecting in the Pacific Northwest.

Land trust walk

PORT TOWNSEND — Jefferson Land Trust docents will lead a nature walk in the Quimper Wildlife Corridor from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Participants will meet at the corner of Elmira Street and Cook Avenue.

The walk will serve as a beginner’s tree-identification session. In addition to teaching participants how to recognize common species, docent Kate Dwyer will provide resources to learn more about native plants.

Adventure travel

PORT TOWNSEND — The Northwest Maritime Center, 431 Water St., will present a slide show and lecture on a sail to the Arctic Ocean, Antarctica and Alaska by Port Townsend adventurers Nancy Krill and Mark Roye at 1 p.m. Sunday.

The couple traveled on their ketch, Tamara.

Tickets to the show are $8 for maritime center and Wooden Boat Foundation members, $10 dollars in advance for general admission and $15 at the door.

Learn to can tuna

PORT TOWNSEND — Local fisherman and Slow Food enthusiast Jeremy Brown will teach participants how to tin their tuna at a canning workshop at the Dundee Community Center, corner of Hancock and 32nd streets, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Participants can take the entire time or just two hours to finish, and will leave the workshop with a supply of locally caught and freshly canned albacore tuna.

Cost is $53 for the workshop.
