Bazaars offer last-minute shopping; time left to cut your own tree, too

As Christmas fast approaches, bazaars are available to pick up that special extra something during last-minute shopping.

And, if you haven’t erected a tree for the holidays, there’s still time to cut your own in the national forest or at tree farms.

Here is a list of holiday opportunities this weekend across the North Olympic Peninsula.

Cut your own tree

To cut your own living tree to decorate for the holidays, you can get a permit from the National Forest Service to find your own or visit a tree farm.

The Forest Service sells permits for $5 per tree. A tree can be felled in designated parts of the Olympic National Forest, and maps are provided with permits.

Permits are available at the Forest Service offices in Quinault, Forks, Quilcene and Hoodsport. One tree per household is allowed.

Offices on the North Olympic Peninsula are:

• Hood Canal Ranger District, Quilcene Office, P.O. Box 280, Quilcene, WA 98376; 360-765-2200. The office is one-fourth mile south of Quilcene on U.S. Highway 101. Weekday hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Beginning Saturday, the office will be open on Saturday and Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

• Pacific Ranger District, Recreation Information Center, 551 S. Forks Ave., Forks, WA 98331; 360-374-7566. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

• Quinault Office, 353 South Shore Road, P.O. Box 9, Quinault, WA 98575; 360-288-2525. The office is two miles from U.S. Highway 101. Weekday hours are from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

At least two tree farms on the North Olympic Peninsula allow you to cut your own tree without a journey into the national forest.

The Lazy J Tree Farm in Agnew, at 225 Gehrke Road, provides a saw and charges $6 per foot, including tax. It is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. seven days a week.

Open daily from dawn to dusk through Dec. 24 is the Deer Park Tree farm, at 4227 Deer Park Road in Port Angeles.

Each tree costs $40.
