PORT ANGELES — There will be a new sheriff in Clallam County.
Bill Benedict, a Clallam sheriff sergeant, pulled out a strong lead over incumbent Sheriff Joe Martin on Tuesday night.
Benedict’s lead so far is about 2-1, or 10,121 to 5,259.
“I’m excited,” said Benedict, 56.
Martin, 72, all but conceded the race after reviewing the results and talking with supporters.
“The voters have made their choice, and I can respect that,” Martin said.
Martin said he had no regrets.
“I did everything I could,” Martin said.
He also said that he hadn’t thought about plans for life after the department.
“It’s too early for that,” he said.
Undersheriff Rich Sill, a veteran lawman hired by Martin a year ago to run the day-to-day operations of the department, said he would not be staying on with a new administration.
“I’m his appointment,” Sill said, gesturing to Martin.
“I’ll be not there.”
Benedict commended Martin for his time spent in the department.
“He worked selflessly for the county for 16 years,” Benedict said.
