Best-selling young-adult author to read at Port Angeles Library

PORT ANGELES — New York Times best-selling young-adult author Marissa Meyer will speak at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

The author of the Lunar Chronicles series, Meyer will read from her work and talk about the writing process.

After the reading, Meyer will autograph books.

Books will be available for purchase after the reading.

Future fairy tales

The Lunar Chronicles is a projected quartet of books that sets fairy tales in the future.

In Cinder, a cyborg Cinderella strives to save the planet from a deadly virus. In Scarlet, a Little Red Riding Hood character tries to save her grandmother from an evil wolf-like villain. Cress (to be released in February) is a retelling of Rapunzel, and Winter (2015) is built around the Snow White story.

The plots and characters of the four novels are intertwined — Cress makes an appearance in Cinder, and Cinder plays a major role in Scarlet.

USA Today described Cinder as “a classic folk tale with hints of ‘The Terminator’ and ‘Star Wars.’”

Childhood love

Meyer was born and raised in Tacoma and fell in love with books as a child, devouring classics such as The Chronicles of Narnia, The Lord of the Rings and Goosebumps.

The idea for Cinder came from a writing exercise.

Both Cinder and Scarlet were written as part of the National Novel Writing Month challenge, an annual online campaign to encourage people to write.

Meyer’s visit to the Olympic Peninsula also includes author visits at Stevens Middle School and Sequim Middle School on Oct. 10-11.
