Bicyclist airlifted to Seattle-area hospital after colliding with car

Man in satisfactory condition on Monday

PORT TOWNSEND — A 74-year-old bicyclist was in satisfactory condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle on Monday after he collided Sunday afternoon with a minivan on state Highway 19.

Ronald R. Hayes of Port Townsend was traveling south on his electric bike at about 4:16 p.m. when he left the highway shoulder and attempted to turn left onto Parkridge Road, according to the State Patrol.

Hayes hit the passenger side of a gray Honda Odyssey, which was also traveling southbound.

The minivan’s driver was Laura A. Anderson, 60, of Port Hadlock, the State Patrol said. She was not charged with any traffic violations. Her passenger was Achillas C. Cotton, 63, also of Port Hadlock.

Both wore seatbelts and neither was injured, according to the State Patrol.

Both the minivan and the bicycle were damaged.

Hayes, who was wearing a helmet, was airlifted to Harborview, where a spokesperson said Monday afternoon that his condition had progressed to satisfactory.

Hayes was charged with failure to yield to a motor vehicle. Alcohol or other drugs were not involved, the State Patrol said.
