A proposal to expand the blue star program for parents of active military personnel to businesses and other relatives was approved Tuesday by American Legion commanders, according to American Legion Post No. 29 Cmdr. Tim Splan in Port Angeles.
“I got the word Tuesday from the Sequim post commander, who had discussed it with American Legion District No. 3 commander who thought it was appropriate,” Splan said.
American Legion chapters here and in Sequim have revived the custom of displaying a blue star banner in the window of a family’s home in honor of a family member serving in the military during hostilities.
The custom first surfaced during World War I when an Army captain with two sons serving in the military designed the banner.
The blue star banner includes an 8.5-inch by 14-inch white field with a red border.
A blue star is sewn onto the middle of the banner.
