The Washington State Emergency Management Department says it has found the cause of the errant warning broadcast June 7 during a monthly test of coastal sirens, including those on the North Olympic Peninsula.
Instead of Westminster chimes providing a soothing sound, alert sirens and in some cases the warning of a volcanic eruption blasted out of 50 warning towers along the Pacific and Strait of Juan de Fuca coasts.
State Deputy Emergency Manager Chuck Wallace said the button used to initiate the test was incorrectly programmed and sounded the alert siren instead of the chimes.
Wallace says the error has been fixed.
But here’s a warning: The next regular test of the coastal system will be on July 5.
