CLALLAM BAY — Betty and Newsom Baker have always left their doors unlocked.
But since their home was burglarized last month, they’re changing their habits.
Now, Mrs. Baker, 68, locks her doors every night, takes her purse with her to bed and keeps her gun within easy reach.
The Bakers are not the only ones taking extra precautions.
“It isn’t a secret,” their neighbor, Robert Blanchette, 75, said last week. “People are getting scared.”
In the past month, the homes of at least five people, mostly senior citizens, have been broken into in this small community — sometimes while the occupants are at home asleep.
