SEKIU — The state highway to Neah Bay remains blocked today because of a large landslide about 4 miles east of the Makah reservation boundary, the state Department of Transportation said today.
The slide, which fell about 6:40 p.m. Friday, contains an estimated 4,000 cubic yards of debris covering both lanes of the only road to Neah Bay as well as homes west of the slide.
Crews estimate it will take most of today and Sunday to clear the several hundred truckloads of debris to make the highway passable. Crews started the cleanup in daylight this morning.
Terry Barnett, acting supervisor for Transportation in the region, said the crews would be working hard to open at least one lane of the highway by the end of the day today.
