DUNGENESS — A Sequim woman was killed today after the van in which she was driving soared over a 30-foot-bluff and plunged into Dungeness Bay.
Authorities said the speeding van traveled more than 300 feet over the bluff and into 3 feet of water.
The woman, who was pronounced dead at Olympic Medical Center in Port Angeles, was identified as Barbara Neil, age 65 or 66, by Clallam County Sheriff’s Deputy Todd Yarnes.
The General Motors van was driving northbound on Cays Road at about 9:20 a.m. when it continued over the bluff at the sharp turn at Marine Drive.
Clallam County Fire District 3 emergency responders were first at the scene with a small boat. A U.S. Coast Guard Sector/Air Station Port Angeles rescue helicopter flew the motorist to Olympic Medical Center.
Neil had head and other injuries sustained in the crash, according to first-responders at the scene.
Clallam County Sheriff’s Office and Washington State Patrol were investigating.
