Breaking news: Victim of house fire identified

CHIMACUM — Sandra J. Bundy, 74, was identified as the woman who died in the Wednesday morning blaze that destroyed a home near the corner of West Valley and Egg and I roads, Undersheriff Tony Hernandez said today.

The man who attempted to rescue her before she died from burns and smoke inhalation was identified as Gregory Bryant, 20, said Hernandez.

He was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment of second- and third-degree burns to the hands, arms and head, the undersheriff said.

He was listed in satisfactory condition today, a hospital spokeswoman said.

A complete follow-up report appears in the Friday/Saturday edition of the Peninsula Daily News.

CHIMACUM — A woman died Wednesday in a house fire, and the passer-by who tried to rescue her was severely burned.

The fire broke out just before 11 a.m. near the corner of West Valley and Egg and I roads between Chimacum and Center.

Keppie Keplinger, spokeswoman for East Jefferson Fire and Rescue, said the woman resident of the house was found dead on her lawn as fire units arrived.

Authorities did not identify her because family members were still being contacted.

Investigators believe the woman, described as being in her 70s, died from burns she sustained in the fire.

The man, also unidentified, was flown by helicopter to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for severe burns to his hands and arms.

“He was a passer-by, a passenger in a vehicle,” Keplinger said.

“This young man ran in to see if anyone was trapped in the home. He pulled her out — which is when he burned his hands and upper arms.”
