Brush fire breaks out on Cape George Road near Port Townsend

PORT TOWNSEND — East Jefferson Fire Rescue firefighters were fighting a brush fire on Cape George Road late Thursday afternoon.

The east side of Discovery Bay Road and Cape George Road by Hastings and Nelson’s Landing Roads were closed to traffic. Firefighters expected to be on the scene for the next eight hours.

Bill Beezley, fire department spokesman, said the blaze between the 200-600 block of Cape George Road was reported at about 4:30 p.m.

Beezley said it is about 1-1/2 to 2 acres in size in an open area of thick brush. Officials have determined the origin area of the blaze.

“It looks to have started on a Seton Construction site,” he said.

“We are in front of the fire now,” he added.

Firefighters connected to a hydrant on Cape George Road near Nelson’s Landing that gave them the resources to help contain the blaze. They were digging a trench around the blaze by 6 p.m. Thursday and had established a wet line.

Beezley said this fire would require lots of water because it was in a wooded area and “needs to be drowned.”

“It is quite windy with strong west, north-west winds gusting to 14 miles per hour that are pushing the flames,” he said.

“There are structures in the area but they are not in any immediate danger at this time.”

East Jefferson Fire Rescue was aided by units from Quilcene Fire Rescue and Port Ludlow Fire and Rescue and Indian Island Naval Magazine. Two brush trucks from the state Department of Natural Resources have also been called to the scene.

Beezley said he did not know the exact cause of the blaze, but it is not considered suspicious at this time and an investigation will be done.
