Brush fire burns about 2 acres along Valley Creek in Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — A brush fire just west of Port Angeles High School burned about 2 acres early Tuesday morning near where Valley Creek forks off.

The fire was reported at 5 a.m. in the thick woods and brush of the Valley Creek gorge near the southern end of South Cherry Street, said Port Angeles Fire Chief Ken Dubuc.

It burned 1.5 to 2 acres on the steep valley walls and did not threaten any structures, he said.

It took a couple of hours to put it out, he said.

“We will be out there checking it every hour or two today [Tuesday],” he said.

Dubuc said the cause of the fire was unknown.

He added that a trail exists at the bottom of the valley near where the fire started.

There were no injuries to crews fighting the fire, he said.

He said the city was fortunate the fire had not happened Sunday, when drier, windy conditions might have whipped the fire into a more serious blaze.

Clallam County Fire District No. 2 initially responded to reports of the fire, as the first report indicated the fire was in the county area, Dubuc said, but the fire was within the city, so the city responded with an engine and four firefighters.

A wildland fire crew from Olympic National Park also responded to assist city and county fire crews.
