This Monday’s speakers will be the Sequim Robotics Team discussing the FIRST Robotics Competition and the relevance of its program to the economy.

Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce — Luncheon meetings are held the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at noon at SunLand Golf & Country Club, 109 Hilltop Drive, Sequim.
This week’s speaker will be Mike Gallagher, section manager of water resources of the state Department of Ecology’s Southwest Regional Office.

North Hood Canal Chamber of Commerce — Representing the “Emerald Towns” of the Hood Canal, Quilcene and Brinnon, the chamber meets at 5:30 p.m. the third Monday of every month, alternating between the Quilcene and Brinnon community centers.
This Monday’s meeting is a general forum at the Brinnon Community Center, 306144 U.S. Highway 101.
Port Angeles Business Association — Breakfast meetings are Tuesdays at 7:30 a.m. at Joshua’s Restaurant, 113 DelGuzzi Drive, Port Angeles.
This Tuesday’s meeting will feature state Rep. Kevin Van De Wege, D-Sequim, who represents the 24th District, which includes Clallam and Jefferson counties and a third of Grays Harbor County.
Normal business will be postponed until next week.
There is a $2.16 minimum charge by Joshua’s for those who do not order breakfast.

Job search event
PORT ANGELES — WorkSource Clallam County’s Kimberly Smith will present “Your Job Search: Make it Positive, Efficient and Effective!” at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., at 10 a.m. Monday (May 13).
The free event, presented in partnership with WorkSource Clallam County, will teach skills to help job seekers be successful in the employment market, including building a strong resume; being confident and fully prepared for interviews; learning where to get skills assessments and career guidance; and gaining understanding of the current labor market
WorkSource is a joint venture of groups dedicated to addressing the state’s employment needs.

Massage class
PORT ANGELES — Introduction to Lymphedema for Massage Therapists will be presented at the Port Angeles Presybterian Church, 139 W. Eighth St., from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday (May 14).
It will be taught by physical therapist Vonnie Voris.
A self-massage technique will be taught for treating swelling like an ankle sprain.
Licensed massage practitioners will earn two continuing education units.
Attendees should park in the lot across the alley behind the church and enter at the double doors.
Wear loose clothing. No tables needed. A $5 donation will cover costs.
The event is presented by the Olympic Peninsula Massage Group.

AARP to give seminar in PA on Wednesday
PORT ANGELES — The AARP will present a free seminar, “Strengthening Your Financial Future,” at the Vern Burton Community Center, 308 E. Fourth St., from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 15.
AARP and financial planning experts will discuss how to spend less, save more and get ahead.
Attendees will be shown how to map out a retirement savings plan.

New clinic director
SEQUIM — Jean M. Stratton has been named executive director of the Dungeness Health & Wellness Clinic.
Stratton succeeds Jim Pickett, who was elected to the clinic’s board of directors last November.
The clinic serves uninsured and underinsured community members.
“Jean was chosen from a number of qualified applicants,” said Dr. Audrey Gift, president of the board.
“She brings extensive business management experience and will help us grow our resources to keep pace with our increasing patient load.”
Stratton will work with clinic director Rose Gibbs and medical director Dr. Kip Tulin.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts in journalism with a minor in sociology.
Her specialized training includes grantsmanship and mediation.
She has served as executive director of two other nonprofit organizations and brings experience in donor development and grant writing.
Stratton is a member of the Sequim Soroptimist Club and is active in community volunteer work.

New 4-H leader
PORT ANGELES — Jenny Schmidt has been hired as the 4-H coordinator for the Washington State University Clallam County Extension.
An open house to welcome Schmidt and learn more about Clallam County 4-H programming will be held in the county commissioners’ meeting room at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Schmidt will supervise volunteers, member enrollment and special events in Clallam County. She succeeds Gena Royal, who retired.
Schmidt has a degree in education from Minnesota State University-Mankato.
She has experience with schools, colleges and many volunteer organizations and was an avid 4-H member while growing up.
Clallam County 4-H clubs teach life skills such as leadership, citizenship, animal husbandry, gardening, crafts and sciences.
Youths in grades K-12 are eligible to participate.
Clubs are organized and facilitated by trained, screened volunteer leaders.

PORT ANGELES — Clallam Transit System Operations Supervisor Scott Gossard has been selected as CTS Employee of the Quarter for the first quarter of 2013.
Gossard was selected “for excelling in his new duties as an operations supervisor.”

His “easygoing personality and positive attitude, both with system passengers and fellow employees, enhances the workplace and helps CTS accomplish its mission goals,” his award citation noted.

Free mobile app created for ONP users
PORT ANGELES — A free mobile app for Olympic National Park has been released by software developer Chimani.
The ONP app delivers updated content, detailed maps, ranger-led event schedules, auto touring points of interest, hiking details, restroom locations, free shuttle bus schedules and breaking news alerts.
Users also can view sunset and sunrise times for the most memorable scenic overlooks, access tide schedules along the coast and review lodging options. The app is designed to work without a cellphone signal.
Other features include crowd-sourced topographic maps based on data from Openstreet maps.com that provide updated information on trail conditions and hazards in areas of the park.
Chimani also has developed free apps for other national parks.
The ONP app and the others are available for the iPhone, iPad, Amazon Kindle and Android devices.
They can be downloaded directly from Apple’s iTunes App Store, Google Play and Amazon AppStore by searching for “Chimani.”

LONG BEACH, Pacific County — Port Angeles-based CresComm WiFi LLC recently installed a Wi-Fi hot spot at Veterans Field in Long Beach, adding another to the company’s growing number of hot spots.
The company, which began doing Wi-Fi about three years ago, also has hot spots in Port Angeles, Forks and Joyce as well as other cities.

Coffee roaster joins farmers market in PA
PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Coffee Roasting Co. has joined the vendors at the Port Angeles Farmers Market.
A small-batch artisan coffee roaster, the business is focused on unique and direct-trade coffees from around the world.
Owner Andrew McInnes offers locally roasted whole coffee beans as well as brewed coffee by the cup every Saturday at the market beginning at 10 a.m.
“We are really happy to have a source for locally roasted coffees return to the market,” said market manager Cynthia Warne.
