Cabin burns in Duckabush Valley outside Brinnon

BRINNON — A unoccupied cabin in the Duckabush Valley about 4 miles southwest of Brinnon burned in a fire Saturday.

No one was hurt.

Crews from Brinnon-based Jefferson County Fire District 4 worked quickly to extinguish the blaze at 200 River Road before it spread to the surrounding forest.

The cabin, however, was destroyed, and leaves on adjacent trees were singed.

“It was a small, little 10-by-10 [foot] thing up in the woods,” said Meril Smith, volunteer firefighter and Jefferson County Fire District 4 commissioner.

“I didn’t even know it was there, and I’ve lived here for 18 years.”

The cause of the fire was under investigation Saturday.

“I don’t think it’s been lived in for years and years and years,” Smith said.

Dispatchers reported the fire at about 12:30 p.m.

The fire was extinguished about an hour later.

“We got there quick enough to knock it down right away,” Smith said.
