PORT TOWNSEND — Jefferson County elections workers counted another 42 votes on Tuesday, which widened Port Townsend City Council candidate Patsy Caldwell’s second-place lead in the primary election by one vote.
Caldwell now has 948 votes, or 26.67 percent, to Mary McQuillen’s 941, or 26.48.
The narrow margin of less than a half of 1 percent mandates under state law an automatic recount, elections officials said.
Still carrying a commanding lead in the City Council race, incumbent Michelle Sandoval has garnered 1,641 votes, for 46.17 percent.
Sandoval will face the second-place finisher in the Nov. 8 general election.
