PORT TOWNSEND — The 2005 Tribal Canoe Journey — the Paddle to Elwha — will stop in Port Townsend for a night of dancing and drumming on Saturday.
Up to 30 canoes carrying pullers from the Lower Elwha, Jamestown S”Klallam and Puget Sound tribes are expected to come ashore around midday at the Port Townsend Boat Haven Marina, said Mary McQuillen, a journey coordinator.
It will bring from 400 to 600 people, including paddlers and ground support crew, to Port Townsend on Saturday.
Drumming and dancing are expected at the journey’s temporarily campsite at Jefferson Memorial Field in downtown Port Townsend.
The canoe armada is scheduled to depart by Sunday afternoon and continue on to Jamestown, McQuillen said.
It will arrive in Port Angeles, the final destination, on Monday for the event, which will last through Aug. 6.
