Carlsborg crematory gets initial OK

CARLSBORG — A crematory whose owner expects to incinerate 30 to 50 bodies each month received the stamp of approval Wednesday from Clallam County Hearings Examiner Chris Melly.

Melly’s decision is almost certain to be appealed by residents and businesses near the proposed facility inside a warehouse at 108 B Industrial Loop.

“We expected that,” said Tony van Renterghem of Carlsborg.

“We have our attorney.”

Linde Family Funeral Service of Sequim would operate the crematory, plus a refrigerated cadaver storage unit, in the 48-by-40-foot warehouse owned by Cory and Mary Ann Startup of Carlsborg and leased to Linde.

Melly attached several conditions to his approval, including a permit from the Olympic Clean Air Agency (see related report).

At an April 23 hearing in front of Melly, Jason Linde, owner, said he wanted to perform cremations for the People’s Memorial Association, a Seattle-based nonprofit group that arranges low-cost funerals and cremations.
