PORT ANGELES — Blue ribbons adorn light and sign poles in downtown Port Angeles in honor of National Police Week.
Clallam County Sheriff’s Department will honor law enforcement officers who died across the nation in the line of duty at a memorial service at 9 a.m. Thursday.
The event, at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., will also honor slain Clallam County Sheriff’s Deputy Wally Davis.
Davis was shot to death while answering a disturbance call in east Port Angeles on Aug. 5, 2000.
“This is a week we choose to remember Wally,” Sheriff Bill Benedict said.
“I think this week is especially important to us because we are the only law enforcement agency in the area to lose an officer in the line of duty recently.”
Thursday is Peace Officers’ Memorial Day — which was established in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy — and falls in the middle of National Police Week.
The Sheriff’s Department Honor Guard will present the colors, a proclamation from the county commissioners will be read, and Benedict will make a short address.
