Children taken by non-custodial parent from Sequim found in California

SEQUIM — Two children taken from Sequim by their non-custodial mother on Thursday were found in Montclair, Calif., on Friday.

Their father, Brian Hanning of Sequim, who has legal custody of the children, expects to be reunited with Christopher D. Hanning, 10, and Joshua N. Hanning, 13, this afternoon.

His sons left with their mother, Loretta J. Edberg, from near the Sequim unit of the Boys & Girls Club of the Olympic Peninsula, said Hanning, 43, speaking from a cell phone Friday afternoon after he started the 1,200-mile drive to pick up his children.

“There’s going to be great big hugs, cheers, enjoyment, for me,” he said, planning to drive all night to the home of his mother, Shirley Hanning, in Apple Valley, Calif., some 45 miles from Montclair, which is about 50 miles east of Los Angeles.

His mother was allowed to keep the children until he arrived.

Edberg has been arrested on investigation of custodial interference, first degree, said Maris Turner, Sequim Police Department public information officer.

A suspected accomplice — listed as Anthony Charles Buchanan, 33, of Montclair by the Montclair Police Department — also was taken into custody on a warrant from the Sequim Police Department, Montclair Sgt. Jason Reed said.

Montclair police found the children with their mother at her last known address, Turner said.

Buchanan turned himself in to the Montclair police after they looked for him at a motel in nearby Ontario, Calif., Reed said.

Extradition proceedings are expected to begin Monday, Turner said.
