CHIMACUM — Students have the opportunity for inexpensive school clothing through a Saturday swap that will allow them to economically renew their wardrobes.
The sixth annual Back to School Swap is set from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Chimacum Elementary School multipurpose room at 91 West Valley Road.
“Kids grow out of their clothes so quickly,” said Elma Beary, volunteer organizer.
“This gives them the chance to trade what they can’t wear anymore for something that fits and can be almost like new.”
Beary expects about 60 families to participate in the clothes swap, which includes “thousands of items.”
Clothes can be donated from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the multipurpose room at the school, Beary said.
Clothes between sizes 5 and 16 are needed, as well as backpacks and shoes.
Clean ready-to-wear items that are no longer wanted can be traded for other items.
Those donating prior to the event will receive one coupon per item. Each coupon can be exchanged for one article of clothing Saturday.
Those attending the event can swap one article of clothing for another or pay $1 per item.
Beary said anyone can participate, although the purpose of the event is to help out low-income families who can’t afford the high price of new school clothes.
After the swap meet, remaining clothes are donated to a foster family program, Beary said.
“This really helps people because clothes are so expensive,” she said.
“And it makes people feel really good when they donate.”
