CHIMACUM — Like filings to a magnet, science-savy students were drawn to Chimacum High School on Saturday to compete in the third annual Invitational Science Olympiad.
“The main reason we do this is to give you an opportunity to compete,” Brett Thomsen told the 300 students gathered in the school auditorium for the opening ceremony.
Thomsen is a Chimacum High School science teacher and the only teacher in the state who holds the competition, he said.
Teams from high schools and middle schools in Western Washington and Oregon come for the daylong event.
Hands-on competitions require students to use scientific principles to win contests.
