CHIMACUM —
Mel Thornton rushed for 214 yards and three touchdowns as the Chimacum Cowboys beat the winless Port Townsend Redskins 30-0 in their Jefferson County rivalry game.
It was Chimacum’s second straight win over Port Townsend and third in their last seven seasons. It was also Chimacum’s second varsity shutout of their longtime rivals since the mid-1970s.
Thornton had 297 all-purpose yards in the Nisqually League game. The Cowboys (2-7, 2-5), which suited up just 19 players, rushed for 311 yards.
Both Chimacum and Port Townsend (now with its second straight winless season and a 19-game losing streak) were eliminated earlier from postseason contention.
