PORT ANGELES — A fire on a second-story deck on a house on Reddick Road was quickly extinguished after quick-thinking neighbors turned on the garden hose and kept the fire low, firefighters said.
The 3:50 p.m. Wednesday fire was sparked by a cigarette that was put out in a flower pot before the owner left the house, said Assistant Chief Mike DeRousie of Clallam County Fire District No. 2.
The cigarette smoldered for about an hour before the fire broke out, said DeRousie, who credited neighbors with using a garden hose to cool it down — and largely put it out — before firefighters arrived.
District No. 2 responded with two engines, one water tender and a medic unit. The Port Angeles Fire Department responded with an engine as well. A total of 13 firefighters fought the blaze.
