PORT TOWNSEND — The Jefferson County Historical Society has received an anonymous $50,000 donation to help restore old City Hall.
“We’re very pleased that the project has inspired enthusiasm,” said Bill Tennent, Historical Society director.
Tennent said the campaign committee, led by David Hero, expects to receive several more large contributions.
So far, the society has raised about half of the $600,000 needed for the interior restoration of the Water Street landmark, Tennent said.
The main floor serves as the home of the Jefferson County Historical Museum.
“A $50,000 donation could be $100,000 because it helps get matching funds,” Tennent said.
“It would need the approval of the donor, but people are usually happy to see their donation double.”
