Clallam Bay prison on lockdown for third day after Monday stabbing

CLALLAM BAY — The Clallam Bay Corrections Center remained on lockdown for a third consecutive day Wednesday in the wake of Monday’s stabbing of a corrections officer.

Officers continue to investigate the stabbing of the unidentified officer, who is now recovering at home.

“We take it day by day,” said Fay Gingell, spokeswoman for the prison.

The Department of Corrections said inmate Carlos Avalos, 19, stabbed a male corrections officer in the neck and face with a pointed object a little after 10 a.m. Monday.

The corrections officer was taken to Olympic Medical Center in Port Angeles with non-life-threatening injuries after the attack and is recovering at home, according to the Department of Corrections.

Avalos is serving a 10-year sentence after pleading guilty to attacking a teacher with a homemade knife and hitting a security officer at a corrections vocational school in Chehalis in June 2012.

Gingell said Avalos remained Wednesday in the prison’s intensive management unit, the 850-inmate facility’s highest-security section.

Clallam County sheriff’s deputies are investigating.

Monday’s attack at the corrections center is the first reported since Aug. 15, when authorities said Daniel Edward Johnson stabbed another inmate with a sharpened toothbrush in an attack believed to have been gang-related.

Johnson is serving a 41-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to the March 3, 2009, murders of his girlfriend and her 1-year-old son.
