CLALLAM BAY –– Visitations and a prison ministry program were called off this weekend as the Clallam Bay Corrections Center remained on lockdown after a corrections officer was stabbed.
Department of Corrections spokeswoman Norah West said Saturday the prison was locked down for a sixth day while corrections officers and Clallam County sheriff’s deputies continue to investigate the stabbing.
West was uncertain when the prison would resume its normal operations. Inmates are confined to their cells during the lockdown.
Visitors prohibited
While phone calls and other privileges were allowed to prisoners Thursday, the continued lockdown meant usual weekend visits from friends and family of inmates of the 850-inmate prison were prohibited and a visit from the Woodinville-based Prisoners for Christ ministry was canceled.
The prison was locked down Monday after inmate Carlos Avalos, 19, allegedly stabbed an unidentified male corrections officer in the face and neck with what has been described as a pointed object at 10 a.m.
West said the officer was recovering at home Saturday after being treated at Olympic Medical Center in Port Angeles.
Avalos remained in the prison’s intensive management unit over the weekend.
He is serving a 10-year sentence for attacking a teacher with a homemade knife and hitting a security officer at a corrections vocational school in Chehalis in June 2012.
