Clallam Bay-Sekiu cleanup is a week earlier than others’

CLALLAM BAY-SEKIU — Volunteers in this West End community plan a Day of Caring event a week earlier than the rest of the county.

Clallam Bay-Sekiu United Way volunteers will clean debris off beaches Saturday, said Patrica Hutson-English, United Way coordinator and Clallam Bay-Sekiu fire chief.

Some of the debris is possibly from last year’s Japanese tsunami, she said, though volunteers won’t know how much of it is from across the ocean until they get to work on the beaches.

“I don’t think there’s a lot right now, but it’s on everybody’s mind,” Hutson-English said.

“Even if it isn’t, the cleanup is needed,” she added.

She hopes Saturday will be the beginning of a sustained effort to keep beaches clean, but there is no organized effort to do that as yet.

“We’ll see how it goes,” she said.

Where to sign up

Volunteers can sign up at Sunset West Co-op, the Clallam Bay-Sekiu Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center and at Chito Beach Resort — or just show up at the resort at 7639 state Highway 112 in Sekiu at 9 a.m.

Work is expected to continue until 2 p.m. or 3 p.m.

A massive earthquake and tsunami March 11, 2011, off Tohoku, Japan, have sent tons of debris across the Pacific Ocean.

Piles of debris have been found on West End beaches.
