SEQUIM — Clallam County’s top planner is urging commissioners to call on Sequim officials to study the effects of two proposed shopping centers on roads, storm water and ground water.
Community Development Director Bob Martin said Sequim planners need to gather much more date on the proposed 50-acre Wal-Mart shopping center at West Washington Street and Priest Road, and the 12-building, 390,000-square-foot Sequim Village Marketplace.
The later project is proposed south of West Washington Street, between River Road and Ninth Avenue.
Across Washington Street from Wal-Mart, the shopping center is expected to include a Home Depot and an Albertsons Food and Drug.
Wal-Mart, once completed, will cover about 195,000 square feet.
“I am hopeful that we can persuade the (Sequim) City Council that the public interest is best served by obtaining the additional information needed to evaluate the impacts of these projects and then require appropriate mitigation for impacts whether inside or outside the city,” Martin said in a memo to county commissioners, County Administrator Dan Engelbertson, Planning Director Andy Meyer and County Engineer Don McInnes.
