PORT ANGELES — Clallam County law and justice officials Tuesday began backing a two-tenths of 1 percent sales tax increase to support programs ranging from community police to Superior Court.
Sheriff Bill Benedict and County Commissioner Mike Chapman, R-Port Angeles, previewed the proposal Tuesday morning to the Port Angeles Business Association’s weekly meeting and got a positive reception.
Six hours later, Benedict and Chapman took the same idea to a subcommittee of the county Law and Justice Council and received the group’s endorsement.
The next step is for the full Law and Justice Council to approve the issue.
It will meet at 3 p.m. Feb. 12 in the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.
After that county commissioners, probably acting in April, could put it on the ballot.
A two-tenths of one percent sales tax increase would cost each person in Clallam County about $24 more a year, based on average income, Benedict said.
