PORT ANGELES — The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office Chain Gang cleaned up 480 pounds of roadside litter from nine miles of U.S. Highway 101 during the week of May 13-18.
Notable items found include four needles, roofing material, a tire, a plastic garbage can, a speaker and a space heater.
Crew members also picked up 10,880 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite on state Highway 112.
Crew members assisted the road department by trimming weeds from 3,597 feet of guardrails on Black Diamond, Little River, Hot Springs and Elwha River roads.
Crew members sprayed approximately 6400 Scotch broom plants with Jim Knape at the Quileute pit.
Crew members also pulled weeds, pruned and disposed of debris with Jennifer Chenoweth at the Mount Pleasant rain garden.
Crew members trimmed weeds at the Deer Park rest area with Jennifer Chenoweth.
Crew members pulled approximately 900 Scotch broom plants from the Blyn county pit.
During the week of May 20-25 the chain gang picked up 12,420 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite on state Highway 112 and picked up 280 pounds of litter from two illegal dumpsites on Little River Road.
Notable items found included a hot tub, window blinds, 5-gallon buckets, roofing material, pieces of metal, cardboard, shipping pallets and plywood.
Crew members assisted the road department by spraying approximately 4,000 Scotch broom plants with Jim Knape at the Place Road and Mount Pleasant pits.
Crew members also sprayed other noxious weeds with Jim Knape at the Herrick Road pit.
Crew members trimmed weeds at the at Mount Pleasant Road intersections and at the Deer Park rest area.
Crew members sprayed noxious weeds, including approximately 2,000 Scotch broom plants at the Kirner pit.
Crew members also cleaned the wash rack at the county shop.
During the week of May 27 through June 1 the chain gang picked up 6,020 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite on state Highway 112, 140 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite on Olson Road, 200 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite on Fish Hatchery Road, 500 pounds of litter from two illegal dumpsites on Taylor Cut-off Road, 3,000 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite in Place Road pit, 50 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite in the Rayonier parking lot, 400 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite in the Deer Park rest area and 30 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite on the North Barr Road ball fields.
Notable items found included two tires, a motorhome and its contents, a tarp, a carpet from a car, a shovel, a shopping cart and a broom.
Crew members assisted the road department by spraying approximately 11,200 Scotch broom plants with Jim Knape at the Whitcomb-Dimmel, Blyn and Forks pits.
Crew members trimmed weeds from 17,061 feet of guardrails on Freshwater Bay, Stripped Peak, Freshwater Park, Nordstrom, Monroe, Deer Park, Ennis Creek, Elwha River, Oxenford, Eden Valley, Whiskey Creek and Camp Hayden roads as well as Kacee Way, Baker Street, Edgewood Drive and Laird’s Corner.
Crew members also trimmed weeds at the Crown Z water park area and at the county shop.
So far this year the chain gang has cleaned 112.8 miles of roadway, picked up 5,930 pounds of roadside litter, picked up 130,070 pounds of illegal dumpsite litter, trimmed 27,236 feet of guardrail and pulled or sprayed approximately 22,300 Scotch broom plants.
