Clallam County stays with Obama after final vote tally

PORT ANGELES — President Barack Obama can count Clallam County in his tally of election success stories.

Obama beat Republican challenger Mitt Romney by 135 votes — 18,515 to 18,380 — after the Clallam County Auditor’s Office tabulated the final 263 election ballots Wednesday.

Romney was ahead in Clallam County by 47 votes on election night Nov. 6.

Obama took a 144-vote lead in Clallam in the second round of vote-counting Friday and held a 110-vote lead among the local electorate Tuesday.

Jefferson County has been solidly in the Obama column since the first round last week.

Nationwide, according to CNN as of Wednesday afternoon, Obama had 62,610,003 votes, or 50.6 percent. Romney had 59,133,398, or 47.8 percent.

Obama has 332 electoral votes to Romney’s 206.

Washington state’s 12 electoral votes went to Obama.

With a handful of ballots still to be counted statewide, the popular vote as of Wednesday afternoon was 1,621,527 votes for Obama, or 55.8 percent, to Romney’s 1,211,680, or 41.7 percent.

As expected, the final batch of ballots brought no changes to winners and losers in Clallam elections.

Incumbent Clallam County Commissioner Mike Chapman and Superior Court Judge-elect Erik Rohrer had 62.4 percent and 55.7 percent wins in their respective races.

State Sen. Derek Kilmer, D-Gig Harbor and a Port Angeles native, had 179,228 votes to 124,700 votes for Republican businessman Bill Driscoll of Tacoma in the 6th District-wide race for U.S. Congress.

Kilmer had 53.2 percent support in Clallam.

He and Driscoll, who conceded the election night, were vying for the seat held by 18-term Congressman Norm Dicks, D-Belfair, who is retiring.

The 6th Congressional District includes Clallam and Jefferson counties.

Clallam County Auditor Patty Rosand said her office received 2,508 ballots Tuesday to go with the final 263 received Wednesday.

The countywide voter turnout was 38,608 — or 81.87 percent — of the 47,157 registered voters who were mailed a ballot.
