SEKIU — A Clallam County sheriff’s deputy was injured in a shooting in which a suspect also was injured between Sekiu and Neah Bay about 1:45 p.m. today, Clallam County Sheriff Bill Benedict said.
Benedict identified the deputy as Bill Cortani, an 18-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Department, who was responding to a trespassing call. The other man was still unidentified.
Both were shot in the arm and hip, Benedict said. They were being flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
Two Washington State Patrol detectives were en route from the Bremerton office to the scene at about Milepost 7 on state Highway 112, Trooper Krista Hedstrom said.
Because part of the state highway is washed out west of Joyce, it elongated the trip for the detectives, who must detour via Beaver.
A full report will appear in Tuesday’s editions of the Peninsula Daily News.
