PORT ANGELES — It’s not over yet, but the lead has changed in the too-close-to-call race for Clallam County District 3 commissioner.
Mike Doherty, D-Port Angeles, is now 72 votes ahead of challenger Phil Kitchel.
Kitchel, a Forks Republican, led by 103 votes when the first-round of counting was completed Tuesday night.
After a count Friday of 8,229 more mail-in ballots, Doherty was four-tenths of a percent ahead of Kitchel — 10,717 votes (50.2 percent) to Kitchel’s 10,645 (49.8 percent).
The next vote count is Thursday, when about 5,000 late-arriving ballots will be tallied.
