Clallam: Fatal-crash victims members of Coast Guard

A Coast Guard seaman stationed with the Port Angeles Harbor-based cutter Active was identified Sunday as one of two people killed Saturday night in a head-on collision on U.S. Highway 101 between Port Angeles and Sequim.

Washington State Patrol troopers identified the victims as Seaman Howard S. Maumasi, 19, of San Diego, a crewman with the Active, and Seaman Katie S. Andrews, 21, of University Park, a member of the Coast Guard’s Port Security Reserve Unit 313 in Tacoma.

The two died at the scene of the crash on Highway 101 at the McDonald Creek Bridge. State Patrol officers said a 1990 Honda driven west by Maumasi hit the guardrail and careened into a second car driven by Gordon S. Messmer, 24, of Seattle. Messmer, driving east in a 2001 Nissan four-door, received only bumps and bruises and was reported as not injured.
