PORT ANGELES — Crews from Clallam County Fire District No. 2 extinguished a fire in a large commercial dumpster at Hartnagel Building Supply just east of Port Angeles about an hour after several people reported billowing smoke Thursday.
Calls to 9-1-1 emergency dispatchers started coming in at about noon about a highly visible fire at Hartnagel Building Supply at 3111 U.S. Highway 101, according to Fire District No. 2 officials.
Initial reports said the fire was within three feet of a large propane tank in the building supply store’s lumber yard, Fire Chief Sam Phillips said.
Seven firefighters kept the fire contained to the 25-foot-long dumpster, Phillips said, using about 3,500 gallons of water because of the large amount of debris it contained.
Assistant Fire Chief Dan Huff said the fire was sparked by embers from barbecue briquettes thrown into the dumpster.
No injuries were reported.
Fire crews left the scene at about 12:48 p.m. Thursday, Huff said.
