SEQUIM — Clallam County will pursue federal disaster aid grant money to buy out about a dozen Kinkade Island residents affected by flooding earlier this month.
“The only way these people are going to be safe is to get them out of there,” Clallam County Community Development Director Bob Martin told Clallam County commissioners Tuesday.
Heavy rains destroyed at least one home on the island Jan. 8 and prompted the evacuation of at least two residences.
Kinkade Island is located on a narrow strip of land between Kinkade Creek and the Dungeness River near Sequim.
An estimated $20 million is available statewide from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Martin said.
